NANOTUBE'04 Conference:
Surface-modified single-walled carbon nanotubes for optical biosensors
Wei Zhao, Chulho SongSingle-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) may have important applications in biosensors based on their unique electronic properties. We have found that by surface modification, the near infrared absorption of the first interband transition of semiconducting SWNTs responds to changes of several biological variables including pH and ethanol concentration. The sensing mechanism is uniquely related to the functionalizing groups on the surface of SWNTs and will be discussed in details.
